Notes:

This is the main engraving from the title page of the 1850 Art-Journal, without the writing.

A group of three topless women stand on an ancient sarcophagus; the women represent sculpture (with a hammer), painting (with an artist’s palette) and architecture (with dividers) respectively, derivative of the ancient Muses of inspiration. On either side of them are Greek and Roman vases and urns, ancient Egyptian statuary, and other items representating the ideals of classical art to which the journal editor aspired.

Behind this group is a large ornate circular frame or cartouche, and a rectangle above that.
