Full-page border with roses, black and white more
borders, full-page borders, roses, flowers, surrounds, frames
This full-page border or page surround or frame, has roses in bloom along with insects. It was engraved with black and white lines so can reproduce very well.
The engraving is signed (I think; it is a little hard to read) E. P. Ward, Gel, and Berveiller, likely Edouard Berveiller (1843-1910), a painter in oils.
In the book, there was a poem inside the frame, in German:
Strauss
Rise, oh dawn of the night, bring eastern comforting roses!
To the world that watches for you, bring eastern comforting roses!
To the poor heart, to which the naked bush of life has never brought roses of pleasure, bring eastern comforting roses!
To the young soul, which a breath of spring and love has fanned into rose-like glow, bring eastern comforting roses!
To the beloved, who with a ray of smile makes my breast
bloom like a rose, bring eastern comforting roses!
To the cheek of my feet, whose scent fills the space of the worlds for me
with eternal spring rose splendor, bring eastern comforting roses!
O bring to adorn every happiness, to comfort every suffering,
which a thorn has intended for it, bring eastern comforting roses! O dawn of the whole world, for the sake of my beloved,
Because she has made the world dear to me, bring eastern comforting roses!
Fr[iedrich] Rükerts
