A man sits on a rustic fence at the edge of a lake, fishing. His boat is tethered next to him. In the distance the sun sinks beneath a horizon with mountains and a forest. It’s a black-and-white sunset.
The engraving is signed A.Q. at lower left and C. Roherle Sc. (?) at lower right, indicating the name of the engraver.
Under the picture is a poem in German by Emil Rittershaus (1834 – 1897).
The thoughts of my spirit seek you;
My dream seeks you in the dark night!
It is a deeply secret illness
And yet a bliss that makes me happy!
Wherever I go, on every path
Your image stands before my soul.
A look at you! — my morning blessing!
A wish for you! — my night prayer!

Dich suchen deines Geists Gedanken;
Dich sucht mein Traum in dunkler Nacht!
Es ist ein tiefgeheimes Kranken
Und Wonne doch, die selig macht!
Wo ich auch geh’, auf allen Wegen
Dein Bild vor meiner Seele steht.
Ein Guck an dich! — mein Morgensegen!
Ein Wunsch für dich! — mein Nachtgebet!
