lettery, initials, death, skeletons, people, babies, children
This decorative initial letter “Y”, or drop cap, is from an alphabet designed by Hans Holbein and dating from 1523.
In the drop cap Y, Death is about to take a baby from its crib while the terrified mother looks on. There was associated text originally from the start of Job Chapter 14, “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.”
