Crusaders conquor Jerusalem, in Jerusalem, Palestine more
knights, battles, people, weapons, flags, banners, battements, sieges, swords, bows, helmets, shields, ringmail
A knight in ring-mail holds the Crusaders’ flag aloft on the top of a castle wall. He points a sword at some defending bowmen just as another knight, climing a siege ladder to be next to him, is shot and falls.
Acrobatics in fill metal armoour is probably not very historical, but the idea of the victor raising a flag is very pervasive.
This engraving was at the start of Chapter Five in the book; the chapter is about the result of the Crusades.
The engracing is signed JS or SJ, in a monogram.
