As to this method the History of the most Blessed Martyr St. Severianus bears witness, where it is thus written: “Accordingly the Prefect, taking Severianus’ silence for contempt, as indeed it was, contrived a yet more terrible punishment for him; and after removing him from the rack, has him taken to a wall. Then after attaching two enormous and very heavy stones, one to his neck, the other to his feet, and tying a rope round the Martyr’s middle, he leaves him hanging in the air from the wall, that his members being dragged asunder by the weights, he may perish in this violent fashion.” Thus the Acts; but enough said, and more than enough, of this sixth form of cruelty.
