The Four Gospels (page 2/2)

details...

Engravings by Eric Gill from The Four Gospels of the Lord Jesus Christ
According to the authorized version of king james i with decorations by eric gill Printed and published at the Golden Cockerel Press MCMXXXI
. The engravings and the typeface were commissioned especially for the book.

This is one of the most beautiful books I own; it has been described as one of the most beautiful books ever produced. I have a fac simile, not the orignal, sadly (or I could sell it and make a mortgage payment!) although the fac simile is also very beautiful, and is one of 600 copies made.

Commissioned works got a copyright of 50 years after publication; in addition, engravings had copyright of 50 years after publication or after the death of the creator (it seems to depend on whether the UK copyright office considers the particular engravings to have been artistic or not) but in either case they’re now out of copyright.

Engraving: Jesus King of the Jews

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.

This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. (p. 264)
