This Tolmen Stone on St Mary’s, the largest of the the Isles of Scilly, was destroyed in 1869 by explosives, so that the granite underneath it could be quarried.
An account of the unfortunate incident, which incident is said to have inspired the creation of the Ancient Monuments Act and the formation the following year of The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
