Early Norman [church] towers sometimes recieved an additional stage within a brief space. Castor (Fig. 1) is a magnificent example of this, and here the upper stage was certainly not contemplated when the tower was first built. In any case, tower-building was slow work; the upper stages are often much later in style than the lower. Indeed, some Norman towers offer in their successive stages a complete epitome of the development of style during the period. (p.42)
Today Castor is in Cambridge; it was in Huntingdonshire in the 1960s. The first part of the church dates to the early part of the 12th century, no later than 1124 There are some notes and photographs at CRSBI.
