Watchmen, in London, London, England more
Two men in long winter cloaks walk the night-time streets of London, each carrying a lantern. One also has a hand-bell and both have spears. The image is credited to “Dekker, 1616.”
Stow says that in Queen Mary’s day one of each ward “began to go all night with a bell, and at eevery lane’s end, and at the ward’s end, gave warning of fire and candle, and to help the poor, and pray for the dead.” (p, 103)
