Faust, or, the Lucky One.
This illustration is from the title page of the book of Konewka’s ilustrations to Goethe’s Faust, and shows silhouettes of Faust (left) bargaining with Mephistophiles, or the devil, standing in a swirl of thistly bramble that sports multiple kinds of leaf, the thistle emaneting downwards from the G in the text, in blackletter, Goethe’s Faust.
