A flautist on the rooftops in the moonlight! He is standing on top of a wall to play outside someone’s bedroom window, watched i think by a cat. Despite the text reproduced below, i am not certain he is meant to be a young man, but perhaps his formal cap and long-tailed mornng coat make him look older than he really is.
The Serenade
The serenade
Painted by G. Neumann.
There he stands on the high garden wall in the midst of the moonlight, the dreamy youth, in front of the window of his Dulcinea and whistles his deep longing out into the silent night.
We do not know whether the beauty lends a sympathetic ear to his serenade or accompanies it with melodious rasping, because the flute player does not have the appearance of an Almaviva or Don Juan, and it is possible that the race on the roof, which does not, however, form his entire audience with amorous images.
Well, Schubert certainly did not imagine the attendee of his serenade, and perhaps the beloved also remembers "the unlucky flute playing" in "Rabale and Love".
