Poesie more
cherubs, boys, people, swans, birds, nudity, poetry, pens, books, musical instruments, wings, boats, hair, water, lakes, trees
A naked boy with wings—a cherub or putto—and a harp behind his back sits on a great swan, dangling one bare foot over the water of a placid lake. He holds a pen which has a star at the end; he looks pensive as if he is about to write in the book he is holding. Or maybe it’s an iPad and he holds a stylus.
He has curly hair, blown back as if by a warm breeze, and there are treees and perhaps a temple in the background.
The work is signed M. Retsch. 1847, and Eng[rave]d by C. A. Jewett and W. Anderson Cintl. O.
Retsch is probably the German artist Maurice Retsch, born in Dreseden in 1779 of Hungarian parents.
The engraving accompanies a chapter entitled “Poetry No Fiction” in the book “Family Treasury of General Literature, Science and Art” by Jethro Jackson, found at the end of this omnibus volume.
