The endpapers of a book hold the cover to the body of the book. Older books, leather-bound, often have ridges on the spine; this is where string is threaded through to hold the signatures, the folded and cut pages, together and to the spine. But later, the spine was glued to the sewn book block, and endpapers were used instead.

This rather large book has a very fancy engraved decoration on its endpapers, complete with a border.
