Notes:

A Mediæval (OK, Medieval in America) miniature painting taken from a Latin book of hours. A bearded scribe uses a quill pen to write in a book that rests on a wooden writing desk. He wears a blue gown and a red hood. In the background a winged angel wearing green sits clutching a large red book. Arched windows in the back wall look out over distant hills or trees.

The picture shows Saint Matthew. His symbol is the angel and he is commonly depicted writing his gospel. This is even more evident in the scan of the picture with part of the page around it - directly above him is the Latin for St. Matthew in gold letters indicating a quote from his gospel. Thanks again to Rebecca Klingbeil for the interpretation.
