In this picture by popular Czech artist Adolf Liebscher (brother to Karel, who was in charge of the pictures for this book), a horned warrior is using a spear to kill a man in a priest’s robe. Another priest leans back against the tree, arms uplifted, either in a dying pose or a supplication to a deity that seems unlikely to intervene helpfully. The linden tree has skills fastened to its trunk, along with carved face-masks, and a small creature that might be an idol stands on a stone altar.

It seems a bunch of yobbos have invaded a sacred ritual.
