Plate XX. Flying Buttresses. more
A caption identifies this as Plate xx (although on the image, in the upper right, the text Pl. LXIII appears, along with a reproduction of a French library stamp). The caption reads as follows:
Drawings by a Master Mason.
2. THE FLYING BUTTRESSES OF A CATHEDRAL CHURCH
(from the Sketch book of Wilars do Honecort.)
Of a mason’s habit of sketching objects which struck him upon his travels we have an invaluable instance in the notebook of the French master-mason Wilars de Honecort, who was employed on the design of the thirteenth-century cathedral of Cambrai: here we find rough plans and elevations, drawings of mechanical devices for use in building, sketches of church furniture and studies of men and animals, which show the variety of his art.
