Notes:

Fig. 15 shows the only form of alternator that has been used on board ship [as of 1892]. It is of the Siemens pattern; having, as already explained, a double crown of short field-magnets with the starlike armature revolving in the space between them.

Fig. 16 shows the excitor, as it is termed, that is used with this dynamo. It is a series wound Siemens’ dynamo of the early type.

The initials W.M.R.Q. on the engraving could be the engraver’s initials, the artist’s initials, or both.
