Engraving: And Now When The Even Was Come, in Jerusalem, Palestine more
religion, easter, death, ladders, people, bare feet, typography, lettering
The text, “And now when the even was come” is a quote from the Gospel of Mark, 15:42. The word Even here is short for Evening.
In the wood engraving, a barefoot man climbs a ladder and another man (standing on the letter “N”) and a woman are taking the dead Jesus down from the cross. Jesus has a styilized halo and a chaste cloth wrapped around his loins, and is being lowered by a rope or cloth tied round his chest and under his arms.
