Sommerabend, which is, Summer Evening, painted by Hermann Sschlittgen and shown at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition (der Grossen Berliner Kunstausstellung) in 1893.

The picture shows, i think, a mother sitting by a stone railing at night, gazing off into the distance, perhaps out to sea, but keeping half an eye out on her daughter who is holding a Chinese lantern, which illuninates her face.

There might be an unspoken message that the child’s father is away, a sailer perhaps, or has gone ot China.
