Notes:

This letter “I” is set about a sketch of an English “transitional” capital from the Galilee Chapel of Durham cathedral. The decorated top-part of a pillar is called a capital, and transitional architcture is from the year 1145 or so to 1190, th end of the twelfth century and the start of the Gothic style.

The sketch is by [Albert] Randolph Ross, an American architect who designed a number of libraries.
